むかしむかし、うみのそばに、浦島うらしま太郎たろうという、わかい漁師りょうしがいました。
Long, long ago, near the sea, there lived a young fisherman named Urashima Taro.
ある日ひ、太郎たろうが海うみべを歩あるいていると、子こどもたちが、小ちいさな亀かめをいじめていました。
One day, as Taro was walking along the beach, some children were bullying a small turtle.
「亀かめさん、かわいそうに。
"Poor turtle.
いじめては、だめだよ。」
You mustn't bully it."
太郎たろうは、子こどもたちから亀かめをたすけて、うみに返かえしました。
Taro saved the turtle from the children and returned it to the sea.
つぎの日ひ、太郎たろうが海うみで魚さかなをつっていると、大おおきな亀かめが来きました。
The next day, as Taro was fishing at sea, a big turtle came.
「太郎たろうさん、きのうは、ありがとうございました。
"Taro, thank you for yesterday.
おれいに、竜宮城りゅうぐうじょうへ、つれていきます。」
As thanks, I will take you to the Dragon Palace."
太郎たろうは、亀かめのせなかにのって、うみの中なかへ入はいっていきました。
Taro got on the turtle's back and went down into the sea.
うみの中なかには、うつくしい竜宮城りゅうぐうじょうがありました。
Under the sea, there was a beautiful Dragon Palace.
お城しろでは、乙姫おとひめさまが、太郎たろうをむかえてくれました。
At the palace, Princess Otohime welcomed Taro.
「太郎たろうさん、ようこそ。
"Welcome, Taro.
ゆっくりしていってください。」
Please make yourself at home."
太郎たろうは、おいしいごちそうを食たべたり、
Taro ate delicious food,
うつくしいおどりを見みたりして、たのしい時間じかんをすごしました。
watched beautiful dances, and spent a wonderful time.
たのしい日々ひびは、あっというまに、すぎていきました。
The happy days passed by in the blink of an eye.
ある日ひ、太郎たろうは、村むらのことを思おもい出だしました。
One day, Taro remembered his village.
「そろそろ、うちへ帰かえらなければなりません。」
"It's about time I went home."
乙姫おとひめさまは、かなしそうな顔かおをしました。
Princess Otohime looked sad.
「それでは、これを持もって行いってください。
"Then please take this with you.
でも、ぜったいに、あけないでくださいね。」
But please, never open it."
乙姫おとひめさまは、太郎たろうに、小ちいさな玉手箱たまてばこをわたしました。
Princess Otohime handed Taro a small treasure box.
太郎たろうは、また亀かめのせなかにのって、うみの上うえに帰かえりました。
Taro got on the turtle's back again and returned to the surface of the sea.
でも、村むらのようすが、すっかりかわっていました。
But the village looked completely different.
太郎たろうの家いえも、家族かぞくも、どこにもありませんでした。
Taro's house and his family were nowhere to be found.
「おかしいな。
"That's strange.
ここは、ぼくの村むらじゃないのかな。」
Isn't this my village?"
太郎たろうは、村むらの人ひとにたずねました。
Taro asked one of the villagers.
「浦島うらしま太郎たろうという人ひとを、知しりませんか。」
"Do you know someone named Urashima Taro?"
「浦島うらしま太郎たろうですか。
"Urashima Taro?
それは、三百さんびゃく年ねんもまえの、むかし話ばなしですよ。」
That's a folktale from three hundred years ago."
太郎たろうは、びっくりして、何なんがなんだか、わからなくなりました。
Taro was so shocked that he couldn't understand what was happening.
太郎たろうは、玉手箱たまてばこのことを思おもい出だしました。
Taro remembered the treasure box.
「この箱ばこをあければ、何なんかわかるかもしれない。」
"If I open this box, maybe I'll understand something."
太郎たろうは、乙姫おとひめさまとのやくそくをわすれて、玉手箱たまてばこをあけてしまいました。
Taro forgot his promise to Princess Otohime and opened the treasure box.
箱ばこから、白しろいけむりが、ふわっと出でてきました。
White smoke drifted out of the box.
すると、太郎たろうは、あっというまに、おじいさんになってしまいました。
And in an instant, Taro turned into an old man.
